Dolly Parton revealed just days before her death that she had put her own health concerns to one side while caring for her beloved husband Carl Thomas Dean. The country music legend, who died aged 80, lost Dean in March 2025 following an unspecified illness. The pair had been married for almost 60 years.
Health Struggles and Cancelled Appearances
Parton had spoken openly in recent months about a series of health problems which forced her to cancel and postpone public appearances, including a planned Las Vegas residency. Days before her death, she explained that some of her health concerns had gone unaddressed while she was focused on caring for her husband.
Speaking after being forced to pull out of an appearance at Dollywood, Parton said: “I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl. It’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health. But I think because we live in a 24/7 world with social media, everything gets magnified in ways it wasn’t years ago.”
Addressing Speculation and Continuing to Work
The Jolene singer also addressed the intense speculation surrounding her health, joking that she had gone from being the “Queen of the Tabloids” to the “Queen of Social Media AI”. Speaking to People, she added: “Seriously, though, even though I’m still healing, I’m still working.”
Parton's husband had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019, although the cause of his death was not made public. Earlier this month, the singer sparked concern after missing the opening of a new attraction at her Tennessee theme park after suffering dizziness and dehydration. Parton appeared virtually as the new NightFlight Expedition attraction was unveiled and explained that doctors had advised her against travelling.
Doctor's Advice and Reassurances to Fans
“I’m still in Nashville, and I’m sorry about that,” she told fans. “I’m supposed to be there in person, like we planned. Now I’ve told you before, all my fans, that I have had a few little health issues. And sometimes I get a little dizzy, and I get dehydrated.”
Dressed in fairy wings and a pink rhinestone jumpsuit, Parton added: “And I’m dehydrated. And so my Nashville doctor clipped my wings, saying you ain’t travelling this week. So I guess if your doctor tells you you ain’t travelling this week, you ain’t travelling this week.”
The star had repeatedly sought to reassure fans amid growing concerns over her health. In October, she addressed persistent rumours in a video shared on social media, joking that she “ain’t dead yet”. She told followers: “There are just a lot of rumours flying around. But I figured if you heard it from me, you’d know that I was OK.”
Las Vegas Residency Cancelled and Final Appearances
Parton was also forced to cancel a planned Las Vegas residency because of her health, telling fans that while she was responding well to medication and treatment, she needed more time before she would be ready to return to the stage. “The good news is I’m responding really well to meds and treatments and I’m improving every day,” she said. “I’m doing really well, and they assure me that everything I have is treatable, so I’m going with that.”
Parton had been due to perform six shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace before the dates were postponed and later cancelled amid her ongoing health concerns. Despite her struggles, she continued to work and make public appearances, with her last public appearance coming in June when she opened Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop and proudly cut the pink ribbon at the new roadside attraction.
The singer also suffered further personal heartbreak in July following the death of her brother Coy “Denver” Parton at the age of 82. His death marked another devastating loss for the Parton family, following the deaths of her brothers Larry, David, Randy and Floyd. Parton's death has now prompted tributes from across the world, bringing to an end the extraordinary life of one of music's most enduring and beloved stars.
