Gabby Logan made an announcement during the BBC's European Athletics coverage after a final was missed due to a channel switch.
The 53-year-old presenter returned to screens on Monday (August 10) to host the BBC's evening coverage live from the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. After a morning of heats, live programming resumed at 7pm on BBC Two, with Gabby joined by Jessica Ennis-Hill, Jenny Meadows and Greg Rutherford.
Missed final announced on air
The broadcast moved to BBC One at 8pm, but the channel swap meant the women's shot put final was missed. The result was shared 30 minutes later, with Gabby announcing: "While we were changing channels from BBC Two to BBC One, we missed the final of the women's shot put."
She added: "And I can tell you that Jessica Schilder there threw herself into gold medal winning position. 20.73 metres for the final throw. She'd already won it by then, of course, and she's the first woman to win this event three times since Nadezhda Chizhova of the Soviet Union, who did it four times in a row between 1966 and 1974."
Gabby concluded: "What a phenomenal athlete she is. She'll be looking to equal, I'm sure, that record."
Viewers criticise coverage
While the missed final was explained, many viewers took issue with the first hour of coverage focusing on pundit chat and replays. One person fumed on X: "I love watching athletics, but the BBC coverage is absolute s**** - so much endless chatting and then the relentless Brits are Best cheerleading. Get on with it."
Another added: "Field events going on all around the stadium and what do we get - ex athletes saying how it was 'in their day'. Just show the b***** action!"
A third said: "Husband watching athletics on BBC. In half an hour, there's only been about 2 races. It's just loads of people like Gabby, Jessica Ennis, and some other people I don't know, sitting around gassing. Yawn."
Others commented: "BBC athletics, yap, yap, yap, yap, yap," and "What's the BBC ever done for me...? Well, they've turned a potentially exciting night of Athletics into a prolonged and boring talkfest."
First medals awarded
The first medals of the 2026 European Athletics Championships were awarded from 8pm. Amy Hunt won the women's 100 metres final, while Jakob Ingebrigtsen took gold in the men's 5,000 metres on his comeback.
Great Britain earned a silver medal behind Norway in the mixed 4x400 metre relay, the first of six relay races this week.
Many viewers were delighted to see athletics return, with one fan writing: "Athletics back on BBC just feels right," while others were pleased to hear Steve Cram commentating. The championships are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
