An art teacher who was unfairly dismissed from her job at Howell's School in Denbigh after becoming pregnant has been awarded more than £30,000 in compensation. Rebecca Raven, 32, from Flint, Flintshire, said she was told she was losing her job after informing the school of her pregnancy.
An employment tribunal in May ruled that the independent girls' school was guilty of unfair dismissal and discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. A remedy hearing on Tuesday ordered the school to pay Mrs Raven £33,923.
Mrs Raven, who had worked at the school since October 2008, said she was shocked to lose a job she loved. 'It is such a relief to have won and to be able to put this case behind me,' she said. 'I hope the school's trustees have come to their senses and won't treat anyone else the way they treated me.'
The school had offered Mrs Raven a part-time post, but her union, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said she was not appointed when she applied. Jayne Philips, ATL's senior lawyer, said: 'We finally have justice for Mrs Raven after fighting her corner for over a year. Schools cannot be allowed to get away with breaking the law.'
