Danna Avila, a 22-year-old from San Jose, was handed the generous check directly from CEO Andrew T. Cathy at the Chick-fil-A location in Emeryville on Tuesday, where he commended her exceptional community service and academic dedication.
Emotional Surprise Ceremony
In a deeply moving reveal, Avila entered the restaurant to discover it filled with cheering colleagues, her emotional family members, CEO Cathy, and even the iconic Chick-fil-A Cow mascot. With festive red and white balloons and streamers decorating the space, Cathy presented Avila with an oversized check featuring the Chick-fil-A Remarkable Futures logo.
Avila reacted with stunned disbelief, gasping "Are you serious?" while covering her mouth with both hands as the CEO beamed and the assembled crowd applauded enthusiastically and captured photographs. Following a heartfelt embrace with Cathy, Avila shared tearful hugs with her proud family members, creating an unforgettable moment.
First-Generation Student's Journey
Cathy explained that the company specifically wanted to support this first-generation college student as she pursues her ambitious dream of becoming an oncologist. "She's worked really, really hard to keep up her grades, a volunteer in the community," Cathy stated. "She's had a lot of leadership roles here in the restaurant, somebody that just has a clear vision for the future, what she wants to do and we just want to come along and help support her."
Avila, who has demonstrated remarkable loyalty by working at the Sunnyvale location previously and returning during school breaks to assist, expressed profound gratitude for the life-changing opportunity. "The journey has been so long and difficult and getting an opportunity like this, I can't even put it into words how thankful I am," she told reporters.
Broader Scholarship Program Impact
Cathy revealed that Avila's scholarship represents just one award within Chick-fil-A's extensive educational support initiative. Since 1973, the company has distributed over $215 million in scholarships to team members. This year alone, Chick-fil-A is granting $29 million to more than 16,000 employees, including thirteen prestigious $25,000 awards identical to Avila's.
Team members across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico have the opportunity to apply for these scholarships through the company's established program. "Creating greater access to education is one of the best ways Chick-fil-A serves communities," Cathy emphasized regarding the initiative.
Historical Origins and Expansion
The scholarship program traces its origins to 1954 when founder Samuel Truett Cathy placed an empty container on the counter for customers to contribute to employee Eddie White's college fund. White subsequently attended Morris Brown College, earned an education degree, built a successful teaching career, and eventually served as assistant superintendent of schools in Clayton County, Georgia.
Now, more than 122,000 team members have benefited from the expanded scholarship program, with over 15,000 awards granted in the past year alone. "Our long-standing commitment to investing in the future dreams and aspirations of restaurant Team Members remains at the forefront of Chick-fil-A's efforts to have a positive impact on the lives of others," Cathy added.
Future Aspirations and Community Impact
Looking ahead, Avila has set her sights on medical school, aiming to address systemic healthcare challenges. "The healthcare system is very much broken and I think there needs to be things done to fix it and if I could give back to my community, other communities, it would be amazing," she explained.
Reflecting on the emotional ceremony, Avila shared: "Seeing them being here and crying for me and just seeing how proud they are of me, it's a feeling I will never get over. I'm so grateful."

This program honors nonprofits making meaningful community impacts and has awarded over 400 grants totaling nearly $40 million. Faith Kitchen, a San Antonio-based nonprofit serving people experiencing homelessness for 45 years, received the distinguished S. Truett Cathy Honoree recognition and the largest True Inspiration Awards grant.
The substantial grant will enable Faith Kitchen to continue providing three daily meals, expand job training programs, and increase operational capacity to meet growing demand, ultimately reaching over 5,000 individuals annually.
