Wetherspoons to Open First University-Managed Pub at Surrey Campus

The UK's first university-owned Wetherspoons pub is scheduled to open in May 2026 at the University of Surrey's Guildford campus. Named the Sir Ronald Wates, this new establishment marks a significant departure from existing student union-run Wetherspoons locations, such as Luther's Bar in Newcastle and Sanctuary Bar in Hull, as it will be directly managed by the university itself.

A New Model for Campus Hospitality

Under this innovative franchise arrangement, the University of Surrey will retain control over key operational aspects, including staffing, pricing, and licensing, while Wetherspoons provides franchisor guidance and support. This model leverages the pub chain's renowned pricing power and supply chain efficiency to deliver value for money.

Will Davies, the University of Surrey's chief operating officer, emphasised the community-focused vision behind the venture. "We wanted to give our community a pub-style venue that could offer genuine value for money alongside quality," he stated. "Wetherspoons' model means students can get a full breakfast for less than £5. The franchise gives us their pricing power and supply chain efficiency whilst allowing us to offer a great experience for our students and staff."

Location and Heritage

The pub will occupy the Wates House building on campus, a site named after Sir Ronald Wates, a building firm boss whose family funded the original construction. Notably, staff from the previous Wates House bar, which closed in December for refurbishment, have been retained for the new venture, ensuring continuity and local employment.

John Hutson, Wetherspoons' chief executive, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. "We are delighted that a Wetherspoon pub is to open at the University of Surrey," he said. "We are confident that it will prove popular with students as well as members of the public and be a great addition for the university."

Accessibility and Community Integration

In a move to foster broader community engagement, the Sir Ronald Wates will be open not only to university students and staff but also to the local public. This inclusive approach aims to create a vibrant social hub that bridges campus and community life.

Wetherspoons' Expansion Strategy

This campus opening coincides with Wetherspoons' ongoing expansion efforts, including its recent foray into mainland Europe. The chain recently launched its first European establishment at Alicante airport in Spain, named the Castell de Santa Barbera. Operating daily from 6am to 9pm, this airport pub offers UK holidaymakers familiar dishes like breakfasts, burgers, and pizzas, alongside local Spanish specialties such as garlic prawns and broken eggs.

Meanwhile, the University of Birmingham's Guild of Students is also planning to open its own Wetherspoons branch in May, indicating a growing trend of partnerships between the budget pub chain and higher education institutions. These developments highlight Wetherspoons' strategic push to diversify its locations and cater to specific demographic markets while maintaining its core promise of affordability and quality.
