In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, a gunman opened fire at a high school in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, wounding at least 16 individuals before taking his own life. The attack occurred at a vocational high school in Siverek, located in Sanliurfa province, marking a rare event of school violence in the country.
Details of the Attack
According to Governor Hasan Sildak, the assailant was an 18-year-old former student armed with a shotgun. He fired randomly at the school, causing panic among students and staff, before retreating inside the building. After a standoff with police, the attacker killed himself with the same weapon. Sildak confirmed that the individual was cornered by law enforcement and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Casualties and Response
The shooting resulted in injuries to 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee, and a police officer. While most victims received treatment in Siverek, five of the wounded—including both teachers and students—were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital due to more serious conditions. Authorities swiftly evacuated all students from the premises and deployed special operations units after the gunman refused to surrender.
Investigation and Motive
Governor Sildak announced that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the motive behind the attack, which remains unclear at this time. School shootings are uncommon in Turkey, making this event particularly alarming for local residents and officials. Video footage from the scene captured dozens of students fleeing the school, running toward the gate and onto nearby streets in a state of distress.
The incident has raised concerns about safety in educational institutions, with authorities pledging to review security measures. As the community grapples with the aftermath, support services are being mobilized for those affected by the violence.
