Scottish Teachers Walk Out Over Workload, Triggering Widespread School Closures

Schools across Scotland are poised to shut down later this month as teachers embark on strike action in a major dispute over excessive workloads. The industrial action is expected to cause significant disruption to education, with Glasgow City Council confirming it will close all primary, secondary, and Additional Support for Learning (ASL) schools on two separate dates.

Glasgow Schools Forced to Close on Strike Days

In a letter to parents, Glasgow City Council has announced that all its schools will be closed on Wednesday, March 18, and Tuesday, March 24, due to the anticipated high participation of teachers in the walkouts. John McGhee, the interim executive director of education services in Glasgow, stated that the council has been "left with no alternative" but to implement these closures.

McGhee expressed regret in his communication, noting, "I am sorry to have to inform you that due to the number of teachers we anticipate going on strike, we will need to close all primary, secondary and ASL schools on these days." He added that nursery schools will remain open, but nursery classes located within primary schools will also be shut down.

Nationwide Industrial Action Looms as EIS Targets Six Councils

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), the country's largest teaching union, has formally submitted a 10-day notice of potential industrial action across Scotland. The union is reportedly targeting six local authorities, including Glasgow, which is the nation's most populous council area. This move follows a vote by EIS members in favour of industrial action to address what they describe as "excessive" workloads facing teachers.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the EIS has indicated that a firm agreement has not yet been reached with the Scottish Government and Cosla, the organisation that represents local councils. A City of Glasgow Council spokeswoman commented, "We have received the EIS strike action notification but understand that talks are ongoing. However, due to the large numbers of our teachers who could potentially be taking industrial action, it will not be possible to open schools to children and young people on strike days."

Uncertainty Over Online Learning and Wider Impact

The council has warned parents that due to the uncertainty surrounding which teachers will participate in the strike, no commitments can be made regarding online learning provision. If this situation changes, individual schools will update families directly. The spokeswoman confirmed that a letter explaining the closures is being issued to families, with updates to follow if circumstances evolve.

This industrial action highlights growing tensions over teacher workloads in Scotland, with the strike potentially affecting five other councils beyond Glasgow. The closures underscore the significant impact of labour disputes on public services and education, raising concerns about the continuity of learning for thousands of students across the region.
