A primary school in Inverness has been compelled to cancel its Christmas show after being targeted with a torrent of racist and abusive messages online.

Cauldeen Primary School on Mackay Road had planned a production of 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme', which was set to include a scene highlighting the plight of refugee children in the Syrian conflict. However, the school was forced to abandon these plans in the wake of significant online hostility.
A spokesperson for Highland Council confirmed the decision was a direct response to negative feedback on social media, which included explicitly racist content and messages directed at school staff.
Police Investigation and Community Impact
Police Scotland confirmed they received a report of threatening and abusive online communications on the morning of Friday, November 21, 2025. A spokesperson stated that inquiries are ongoing.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of local tension. The UK Government recently announced plans to house approximately 300 male asylum seekers at the Cameron Barracks in Inverness, a development that has sparked debate in the city.
School Prioritises Wellbeing Over Performance
In an official statement, a Highland Council spokesperson emphasised the school's priorities: “Following negative feedback on social media, including racist and abusive messages – some of which were directed at the school and staff – the school has made the wellbeing of staff and pupils its main priority.”
Instead of the traditional Christmas show, classes will now participate in other festive learning activities within the school. The council clarified that under devolved school management, such operational decisions rest with the school itself.
The cancellation highlights the real-world consequences of online hate, disrupting a cherished school event and forcing educators to focus on safeguarding rather than celebration.
