Milford Haven Pupil Charged with GBH After Teacher Stabbing

A 15-year-old pupil from Milford Haven Comprehensive School in Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales, has been formally charged with grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article on education premises following a violent assault on a teacher. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has sent shockwaves through the local community and drawn condemnation from Welsh government officials.

Police Confirm Injuries as Stab Wounds

Dyfed-Powys Police initially described the teacher's injuries as non-stab wounds but have since confirmed, after detailed inquiries by specialist officers, that they were indeed stab wounds. Senior Investigating Officer DCI Matthew Briggs explained that early statements were based on preliminary information. The teacher was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

Pupil Remanded in Custody

The teenage boy has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Saturday. Police have assured the public that there will be a higher than usual police presence in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance. Officers will also be working closely with local secondary schools to offer support throughout the week.

Following the assault, the school was closed on Friday, with all pupils returning home unharmed. The incident reportedly involved a pupil brandishing a weapon, leading to the teacher's injuries.

Welsh First Minister Condemns Violence

Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan, who visited the school only last week, expressed deep concern over the incident. In a statement shared on social media, she said, "I am deeply concerned by the incident at the school in Milford Haven. Having visited the school only last week, this news is particularly shocking."

Morgan added, "My thoughts are with the injured teacher, their family and the entire school community during this difficult time. I want to pay tribute to the emergency services and school staff for their swift and professional response in ensuring the safety of pupils and staff."

She emphasised, "While this remains an active police investigation that must be allowed to proceed without interference, I want to be unequivocal ... violence of any kind has no place in our schools." The Welsh government has pledged to work closely with local authorities, schools, and partners to support those affected and ensure schools remain safe environments.

Union Official Describes Incident as "Frightening"

Neil Butler, the NASUWT union's national official for Wales, described the assault as "frightening." In a statement, he said, "Teachers sign up to become stewards of the next generation, and to share their joy and passion for education. We must remember that, like everyone else, they are entitled to be safe at work."

Butler continued, "We wish the injured teacher a full and swift recovery. But it may not be that simple. As violence in schools increases, teachers will need more than hopes and prayers." This statement highlights growing concerns about safety in educational settings across Wales.

The incident at Milford Haven Comprehensive School underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining safe learning environments. With the police investigation active and support measures in place, the community awaits further developments as the case progresses through the legal system.
