Black Superintendent Addresses Viral Graduation Shoving Incident
Rainey Briggs, the Black superintendent who was physically pushed by a white father at a high school graduation to prevent him from shaking his daughter's hand, is now publicly sharing his perspective on the disturbing event. The incident occurred on May 31 at Baraboo High School's graduation ceremony, where Matthew Eddy rushed onto the stage as his daughter was greeting school officials. Viral video footage clearly shows Eddy grabbing Briggs by the arm and forcefully dragging him away from his daughter, creating a scene that has sparked widespread discussion and concern.
Questioning the Optics and Racial Implications
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Briggs expressed uncertainty about whether Eddy's actions were racially motivated, but he acknowledged the troubling appearance of the situation. "The optics don't look good," Briggs stated. "The optics are what people around the world have gotten to see. And it's caused them to formulate in their minds what was behind this situation." He emphasized that only Eddy himself could definitively explain whether race played a role in the confrontation.
Briggs also reflected on the broader context of the school district, noting that Baraboo High School is predominantly white. "Do I think it's consisting of students of color feeling like they don't belong here? I think there are some pockets of that, possibly," he remarked. This comment gains additional significance given the school's previous national attention in 2018, when a photo surfaced showing several current and former students performing the Nazi salute, highlighting ongoing concerns about inclusivity and tolerance in the community.
Legal Actions and Apology Concerns
Briggs has taken legal steps in response to the incident, filing a restraining order against Eddy, who now faces a charge of disorderly conduct. While Briggs received communication from Eddy's lawyer on Monday evening, he has yet to hear directly from Eddy himself. According to Briggs, the lawyer indicated that Eddy understands his mistake and feels remorseful for his actions. "I took that as some form of apology, but that's not something I think at this time amounts to a solid apology from my perspective," Briggs explained, underscoring his desire for a more direct and sincere apology from the father.
Eddy's version of events has been contradicted by video evidence. In newly released police footage, Eddy falsely claimed that Briggs touched him first, a statement disproven by the graduation video. "I didn't touch him until he touched me," Eddy told Baraboo Police Officer Brandon Meyer shortly after the incident, as reported by local outlet WISN 12. In the police interview, Eddy also expressed frustration over a perceived slight involving his daughter's meeting with school officials regarding expulsion and alleged that Briggs had previously "rolled his eyes" during a conversation about his daughter.
Community Response and Impact on Students
The Baraboo School Board has strongly condemned Eddy's behavior, issuing a statement that emphasizes the importance of safety for all employees. "No employee of the School District of Baraboo should fear for their physical safety when fulfilling their job duties or at any other time," the board declared. "That this adult felt emboldened to behave in this way in front of hundreds of students and other adults should deeply trouble us all; this type of behavior will not be tolerated."
Briggs expressed sympathy for the students affected by the incident, particularly Eddy's daughter and the other graduates. "This is a moment in time for them that they'll never get back the way they had hoped for this to go," he said, highlighting the emotional impact on what should have been a celebratory occasion. Despite Eddy telling police he felt sorry for how his actions affected his daughter, the exact reasons behind his decision to shove Briggs remain unclear, leaving many questions unanswered as the community grapples with the aftermath of this very public altercation.
