US Census Data Reveals Millennial and Gen Z Strongholds in Liberal Urban Centres
Millennial and Gen Z Hubs Dominated by Liberal Cities

Recent analysis of United States Census Bureau data from 2024 has pinpointed the nation's most prominent millennial and Generation Z population centres, uncovering a definitive trend towards progressive, Democrat-led urban environments. The research, conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle, examined counties across America to identify those with the highest density of residents from these younger generations.

A Generational Shift Towards Urban Liberalism

Millennials, defined as individuals born between 1981 and 1996, demonstrate a pronounced tendency to reside in fashionable, often expensive metropolitan areas that are typically governed by Democratic leadership. This pattern is mirrored by the subsequent Generation Z, encompassing those born from 1997 to 2012, who show similar preferences for these urban hubs.

Political affiliation data underscores this alignment. A recent Gallup poll indicates that 27 percent of Gen Z Americans identified as Democrats in 2025, with 24 percent of millennials reporting the same affiliation. This contrasts with 17 percent of Gen Z and 21 percent of millennials who identified as Republican. Notably, the largest political segment within both groups consists of Independent voters, comprising 56 percent of Gen Z and 54 percent of millennials.

The analysis further reveals that nine out of ten counties with populations exceeding 500,000 residents, which are dominated by these younger Americans, are unequivocally home to politically liberal cities.

Top Millennial Magnets Across the Nation

Denver, Colorado: The Premier Destination

Denver, Colorado, claims the top position as the nation's foremost millennial magnet. Within Denver County, millennials constitute a significant 29.2 percent of the population. Generation Z residents follow at 22.3 percent. Collectively, these two age groups represent over half of the city-county's demographic makeup.

The City and County of Denver, with an approximate population of 729,000, is described by the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation as a "relatively young region." The average resident age is 37, notably younger than the national average of just over 39. Denver's appeal is attributed to its vibrant art scene, high walkability, dynamic nightlife, and robust job market, despite a cost of living nine percent above the national average. The city has maintained unbroken Democratic leadership since 1963.

Washington, D.C.: The Capital's Youthful Demographics

The District of Columbia holds the second-highest concentration of millennials nationally, at 28.2 percent of its population, with Gen Z comprising 23.2 percent. With an average age of about 35 and a population of roughly 702,250, D.C. is a notable youth centre. The district's political landscape is overwhelmingly liberal, with recent data suggesting 76 percent of voters are registered Democrats.

Hoboken and Hudson County, New Jersey

Hoboken itself, with a population around 70,000, boasts an average age of approximately 32. The city recently elected progressive Democrat Emily Jabbour as mayor.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco, functioning as both a city and a county, has a population of about 827,000. Millennials account for 27.2 percent and Gen Z for 18.4 percent. While the median age is around 40, the area remains a major draw for tech sector opportunities due to its proximity to Silicon Valley. Over 62 percent of its voters are registered Democrats.

Austin and Travis County, Texas

Travis County, Texas, home to the state capital Austin, has approximately 1.39 million residents, with over one million in Austin city proper. The data shows 27 percent of the county are millennials and 21.9 percent are Gen Z, with an average age of 34.5. Austin stands as a liberal enclave within the predominantly Republican state, led by Democratic Mayor Kirk Preston Watson.

Additional Notable Counties

The analysis highlighted several other counties with significant millennial presences:

  • Multnomah County, Oregon (Portland): 27 percent millennials.
  • King County, Washington (Seattle): 26.2 percent millennials.
  • Williamson County, Texas (Round Rock): Described as a 'purple' area, showing mixed political loyalty.
  • Davidson County, Tennessee (Nashville): 25.1 percent millennials.
