If your towels are emerging from the wash with a less-than-fresh scent, an unconventional liquid might be the solution. Social media is abuzz with complaints about towels smelling 'funky,' but a simple household ingredient could change that.
The Vodka Solution
TikTok user @brunchwithbabs, known as Babs, revealed that vodka is the secret weapon against stubborn odors. In her viral clip, she explained: 'I learned this one from my grandmother. A simple spray of vodka can eliminate odors on clothing, furniture, upholstery, and even mattresses.'
She recommends using a spray bottle with a mist setting, holding it about 18 inches away, and concentrating on areas like underarms. The vodka attaches to smelly molecules and neutralizes them.
How to Use Vodka in the Wash
Plumbworld expert Jennifer Shaw backed the technique: 'Vodka is a great disinfectant. It kills bacteria and neutralizes odors.' Simply pour a cupful of vodka into the washing machine with your usual detergent. The alcohol evaporates during the cycle, leaving no residue or scent.
Jennifer assured that vodka won't harm towels or the machine. 'The washing process gets rid of the alcohol, so there's no need to worry,' she said.
Alternative Hacks for Fresh Towels
- Bicarbonate of Soda: Softens water, enhances detergent effectiveness, brightens whites, and removes odors.
- Hydrogen Peroxide: A mild bleach and disinfectant, excellent for stubborn stains on white towels.
Jennifer also emphasized the importance of drying laundry completely before storing. 'Any remaining moisture can lead to mildew and musty smells. If possible, hang clothes outside to dry in the sun—the UV rays act as a natural disinfectant,' she advised.
