A quiet street in Sydney's western suburbs became the scene of a horrific alleged attack that has left a young man fighting for his life in hospital with severe burns.
The 20-year-old victim was reportedly doused in petrol and deliberately set alight in what authorities believe was a targeted act of violence connected to an ongoing feud between two families.
A Terrifying Ordeal
Emergency services rushed to the residential property on Saturday afternoon after receiving multiple distress calls about the incident. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before urgently transporting him to a specialist burns unit where he remains in critical condition.
"This was an absolutely horrific act of violence that has left a young man with life-changing injuries," a police spokesperson stated. "We believe this was a targeted attack rather than a random act."
Family Dispute Turns Violent
Detectives from the State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad have taken charge of the investigation, revealing that the attack appears to be connected to a long-running dispute between two families known to each other.
Neighbours described hearing shouting and commotion before seeing emergency vehicles flood the usually peaceful street. "It's normally so quiet around here," one resident told reporters. "To think something this brutal could happen in our neighbourhood is terrifying."
Community in Shock
The alleged petrol attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing disbelief at the extreme nature of the violence. Local community leaders have called for calm as police continue their investigation.
Police have assured residents that there is no ongoing threat to the wider community but have urged anyone with information to come forward. "We are following several strong lines of inquiry and are determined to bring those responsible to justice," the police spokesperson added.
The investigation continues as the victim remains in hospital, with family members maintaining a vigil at his bedside.
