Three people have died after falling from Germany's tallest observation tower, the Harzturm, in the Upper Harz region. The victims were found at the base of the 65-metre-high structure, which is a popular tourist attraction in the Harz Mountains. Firefighters responded to the scene but the trio were pronounced dead.
Investigation launched
Police have launched a major investigation into the incident, but the cause of the falls remains unclear. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or any details about the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The Harzturm
The Harzturm is a wood-and-steel observation tower that stands 65 metres tall, making it Germany's tallest such structure, according to the operator. The tower cost approximately 10 million euros to build and received about 1.4 million euros in funding from state and federal governments. It features two observation decks and a 'skywalk' with a glass floor at a height of 45 metres.
The incident has shocked the local community and visitors. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
