Teen who attacked girlfriend with golf club avoids jail

A teenager who subjected his girlfriend to a horrific three-hour ordeal, including battering her with a golf club, throwing bleach, and burning a memorial to her late grandmother, has avoided an immediate jail sentence.

The Attack

Callum Peacock, 19, hurled paint, dumbbells, and a golf club at his partner during the attack on 25 January in St Helens. He also set fire to a memorial T-shirt bearing a picture of her deceased nan, telling her she would "rot in hell." The victim cowered in a ball on the bathroom floor as Peacock smashed through the door and threatened to burn down their flat.

Police found the victim sobbing behind a damaged bathroom door. During the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on 10 June, Peacock admitted to throwing items, hitting her with a broom handle and golf club, putting her in a chokehold, and using an aerosol and lighter to set fire to the bathroom door. Two days prior, he had struck her with a hammer after an argument.

Expert Reaction

Gemma Aitchison, an expert in violence against women, expressed shock at the case, blaming "incel culture" and pornography. She stated: "Our boys are being groomed by incel culture and pornography and our laws still haven't caught up with the internet age." She noted that Women's Aid data shows girls aged 16-22 are most at risk of domestic abuse and called for an end to tokenism, urging the system to prioritize women's safety over men's feelings.
