Aldi's proposal to open a new store in a former IKEA distribution centre in Gateshead has garnered strong public backing, with 95% of respondents supporting the plans.

The supermarket chain contacted more than 2,000 households near the proposed site in Blaydon Industrial Park. Of the 579 responses received, 95% were in favour, 4% objected, and 1% were unsure. A total of 487 respondents selected the option: “I love it, I hope the council approves the plans.”
Store details and jobs
The 2.45-hectare site on Chainbridge Road would be converted into an Aldi store, creating 40 full-time jobs. Proposed opening hours are 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 6pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
Need for the store
Aldi says the new store would alleviate pressure on its existing branches at Metro Park and Dunston, which are “increasingly busy”. The application documents state: “Aldi has identified a clear local need for a discount supermarket in this area. Residents looking to access Aldi’s range of low-cost, high-quality products currently travel to locations at Metro Park or Dunston. Both stores are increasingly popular and busy, serving different catchment areas. A new food store in this location would improve choice, convenience and access to a discount food retailer, and fulfil longstanding aspirations for regeneration at this site.”
A decision on the planning application has not yet been made by council planners or the planning and development committee.
