FIFA has launched an investigation into Argentina's conduct following the 2026 World Cup final, appointing a prosecutor to examine the turbulent scenes that erupted after Spain's 1-0 victory at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
Post-Match Violence
Numerous fights broke out at full-time, including an incident where Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to knock Eric Garcia to the ground, grab him by the throat, and push Gavi down seconds later. The initial red card for Paredes was later removed from FIFA's official records, with no formal sanction handed to the midfielder.
Further disorder unfolded when Nahuel Molina allegedly lashed out at Rodri during celebrations, and Argentine coach Roberto Ayala reportedly threw a punch at Dani Olmo before Garcia intervened.
Previous Punishment
This is not the first time Argentina has faced FIFA scrutiny. Four years ago, after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the team was charged with "offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play" and "misconduct of players and officials." One incident involved Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made an obscene gesture with his Goalkeeper of the Tournament award and was later seen mocking France striker Kylian Mbappe. Argentina was fined £18,300, but no individual player faced disciplinary action.
FIFA Statement
An official FIFA statement said: "Following a review of the official match reports for the Spain versus Argentina FIFA World Cup final, and in accordance with article 36 of the FIFA disciplinary code (FDC), the FIFA disciplinary committee has tasked a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to look into possible FDC violations related to the post-match events. More information will be released by the FIFA disciplinary committee once the prosecutor has finalised their report."
Falklands Banner Controversy
FIFA is also examining reports from Argentina's semi-final clash with England, where the squad unfurled a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' (The Falklands are Argentine). Premier League players including Tottenham's Cristian Romero, ex-Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, and Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez have faced criticism and may face individual sanctions.
