A seven-year-old girl is in hospital with a serious leg injury after being hit by a car in Seaham. Police, paramedics and the Great North Air Ambulance Service were called to Station Road just before 12:30 BST on 24 July following reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.
Driver Arrested
The 44-year-old driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and causing serious injury by careless driving, Durham Constabulary confirmed. The road was closed while officers worked with the ambulance service to treat the patient before she was taken to hospital.
Emergency Response
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called to a person injured following a road traffic incident on Station Road in Seaham at 12.08pm on 24 July. We dispatched an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to the RVI by road.'
The Great North Air Ambulance Service said their critical care team was activated at 12:27 and arrived on scene at 12:42. A spokesperson said: 'Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient.'
The girl was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). The driver, from Seaham, remains in police custody.
