California Birthday Party Massacre: Three Children Among Four Killed in Stockton Shooting
Stockton shooting: Three children killed at birthday party

Tragedy at a Child's Celebration

A joyous birthday celebration in California turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on Saturday night when an unidentified gunman opened fire inside a banquet hall. The shooting occurred at around 6pm in the city of Stockton, where more than 100 people had gathered for a party.

Young Lives Cut Short

San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, Heather Brent, confirmed the devastating toll on Sunday. Among the four fatalities were three children aged eight, nine, and 14. A 21-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was also killed. Eleven other party-goers were wounded in the attack.

'This was a birthday party for a young child, and the fact that this happened is absolutely heartbreaking,' Brent told reporters, capturing the community's shock and grief.

A Targeted Attack and Plea for Information

Authorities have stated they now believe the assault was 'targeted,' though they have not elaborated on a specific motive or identified who the intended victim might have been. Brent pleaded with the public for assistance, urging anyone with surveillance footage, local knowledge, or even rumours to contact the sheriff's office immediately.

She emphasised that releasing details about a potential suspect or motive could hinder the investigation, stating, 'Finding the person or persons who committed this crime is the No. 1 priority.'

Community leaders expressed profound anguish. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi revealed the 8-year-old victim attended a local school and had a parent employed by the Stockton Unified School District. Counsellors will be made available in city schools this week.

'They should be writing their Christmas lists right now,' Mayor Fugazi said, her voice heavy with emotion. 'Their parents should be out shopping for them for Christmas. And to think that their lives are over. I can't even begin to imagine what these families are going through. It breaks my heart.'

Faith leaders organised an afternoon vigil to honour the dead and pray for the wounded, while District Attorney Ron Freitas directly addressed the shooter, demanding they 'turn yourself in immediately.'

This tragedy casts a dark shadow over Stockton, a city which, according to city data, had recorded 54 homicides in 2024—a number higher than other California cities of a similar size, though the rate had been declining through October this year.
