A family celebration in Stockton, California, turned into a scene of tragedy after a gunman opened fire, leaving four people dead and ten others injured. The shooting occurred at a children's birthday party on the evening of November 29.
Targeted Attack Leaves Community in Mourning
According to the San Joaquin County sheriff's office, the incident is believed to have been a "targeted attack." Shots were fired around 6pm at the family gathering, which was being held to celebrate a child's birthday. In total, 14 people were hit by gunfire, including children. Authorities fear the death toll could still rise as they have not yet released details on the condition of those hospitalised.
Massive Manhunt Underway for Suspect
The suspected gunman remains at large, and a major police manhunt is underway. Law enforcement is urging the shooter to turn themselves in. San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas has made a public plea, stating: "If you have any information as to this individual, reach out immediately." The gravity of the event has reached the highest levels of state government, with California Governor Gavin Newsom having been briefed on the incident.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the local community. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee revealed a personal connection to the tragedy, saying, "My family was at this event and was scared for her own child and grandchild. I am sick of all of this." Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi described the situation as "heartbreaking and painful" for the city.
