Seven people were arrested for offences including criminal damage and assaulting police officers after England’s World Cup quarter-final victory against Norway yesterday, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.
Celebrations Turn Chaotic in Central London
Footage on social media shows fans flooding the streets around the West End, blocking roads and dancing as they brought traffic to a standstill. Crowds of England supporters surrounded cars, chanting “It’s coming home,” and waving the flag of St George. Some individuals were seen climbing traffic lights and scaffolding, while others set off fireworks. Police officers could be heard telling fans to “move back” as they attempted to restore order.
Despite the largely good-natured atmosphere, the Met Police confirmed seven arrests. One person was arrested for criminal damage; two for assaulting police officers; two for being drunk and disorderly; and two for other public order offences. All remain in custody.
Witness Describes ‘Festival’ Atmosphere
One witness described the atmosphere in central London as “buzzing,” resembling a “festival” more than a typical football watch party. The celebrations followed England’s 2-0 win over Norway, which secured their place in the semi-finals.
The incident comes just days after a police officer was knocked unconscious during clashes that erupted in central London following Morocco’s defeat to France in the World Cup quarter-finals. Hundreds had gathered on the streets on Thursday night after France beat Morocco 2-0, with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele. Police in riot gear formed a line across the road in an attempt to restore order.
