New Clarendon Leisure Centre to Open by 2028 After Arson

Salford mayor Paul Dennett has announced that a replacement for the Clarendon Leisure Centre, which was destroyed in an arson attack on May 10, 2024, is expected to be completed by 2028. The new facility will be built on Churchill Way, near the former Brass Handles pub site, bringing the centre closer to the shopping centre and transport interchange.

Timeline and Progress

At a council meeting on July 15, 2026, Dennett revealed that the latest design stage is complete. The council expects to submit detailed plans within six months, followed by a 16-month construction period. “The next steps are to develop the designs further, submit a planning application, and involve residents in shaping their new leisure facility,” Dennett said. “Subject to council approvals, the current timetable is six months for detailed design and planning, and approximately 16 months for construction.”

Insurance Dispute Delays

The arson attack occurred shortly after a £359,000 repair job was completed on the 50-year-old centre, which served communities in Pendleton, Langworthy, and Seedley. The council has been locked in a dispute with its insurance firm over the claim, causing “frustrating delays,” according to Dennett. Despite this, the council has committed “hundreds of thousands of pounds” to move the project forward while awaiting a settlement. Officers have also applied for grant funding from Sports England to reduce the burden on local taxpayers.

Community Impact

Known locally as “Clarendon Rec,” the centre was a beloved community hub. Dennett acknowledged the community’s patience: “We know the local community has waited far too long for this new facility, but real progress is being made.” The council did not respond to a request for the full cost estimate of the project.
