Ancelotti and Tuchel Rule Themselves Out
Carlo Ancelotti, the 66-year-old Italian tactician, has officially withdrawn from the race to become Manchester United's next manager by agreeing to a new four-year deal with the Brazilian national team. Ancelotti, who was appointed in May 2025 and has yet to oversee a major tournament, recently guided Brazil to World Cup qualification. His decision follows a similar move by Thomas Tuchel, the 52-year-old German coach, who signed a two-year extension with England after leading the team through a successful qualification campaign.
Both managers had been strongly linked with the impending vacancy at Old Trafford, with Tuchel having previously met with United officials in 2024 to discuss potentially replacing Erik ten Hag. When questioned about discussions with other clubs before committing to England, Tuchel stated, "Confidential. But I was very committed to the idea after November to stay and the FA was as well." He added that while a return to club football might tempt him in the future, it would not occur within the next two-and-a-half years.

With Ancelotti and Tuchel out of the picture, interim manager Michael Carrick's prospects of securing the role permanently have notably improved.
