Dad cancels daughter's 16th birthday party after alcohol at school

A father has sparked an online debate after cancelling his 16-year-old daughter's birthday party following what he described as her 'disgraceful' behaviour. The man, who posted anonymously on Reddit, revealed that his daughter had brought a bottle of alcohol to school, leading to a five-day in-school suspension.

Father sets conditions for party

The father explained that his daughter had been struggling academically and socialising with the wrong crowd. He had hired tutors and arranged therapy sessions. When she asked to celebrate her 16th birthday at home, he agreed on the condition that she stay out of trouble and perform well on a math test. The party was scheduled for the weekend, but days before, the school called to report that his daughter had 'snuck in a water bottle filled with alcohol' and that one of her friends had to be sent to the nurse. The father said: 'I went to pick her up and she tells me that her one friend pressured her into bringing the bottle to school.'

Online reactions divided

Reddit users largely supported the father's decision. One commented: 'You are a parent. And I think a pretty good one! She's lucky she wasn't expelled, honestly.' Another said: 'You gave her some conditions under which the party could happen. She broke one of the conditions and now has to face the consequences. Good for you for setting boundaries.' However, on the parenting forum Mumsnet, a woman questioned whether cancelling a birthday is excessively severe. She had recently cancelled her 6-year-old son's birthday party after his 'disgraceful behaviour' at home and school. She said: 'I think I have done the right thing, but I feel truly awful. I have had his teacher talk to me four times already this term, twice this week, about his attitude... He has looked forward to it for a long time, but the threat of cancelling hasn't made a difference to his behaviour.'

Expert advice against cancelling parties

Child psychologists and parenting experts advise against cancelling a birthday party as a form of discipline. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teaching children right from wrong with calm words and actions. They advise parents to 'have clear and consistent rules that your children can follow' and to 'notice good behaviour and point it out, praising success and good tries'. According to experts, using a significant event like a birthday party as a punishment can damage the parent-child relationship and may not effectively teach long-term behavioural change.
