Stockton Shooting: Four Dead, Including Three Children, at Toddler's Birthday Party
California mass shooting at child's party leaves four dead

A community in California is reeling after a mass shooting at a young child's birthday party left four people dead, including three children, and at least 11 others injured.

Details of the Tragedy

The violence erupted on Saturday, 30 November 2025, at a banquet hall in Stockton, a city in California's Central Valley. More than 100 people had gathered to celebrate a two-year-old's birthday when gunfire broke out as attendees were preparing to cut the cake.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deceased were an eight-year-old, a nine-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 21-year-old man. While authorities have not formally released names, family members have begun to identify their loved ones.

Amari Peterson, 14, was killed by a gunshot wound just above the heart. His father, Patrick Peterson, described the harrowing scene to local media, stating he saw his son crawling on the ground before attempting to resuscitate him. Amari's sister was also grazed by a bullet.

The family emphasised in a GoFundMe appeal that Amari was a bright, sporty teenager with no gang affiliations, tragically caught "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Susano Archuleta, 21, was also killed after being shot in the neck. His brother, Emmanuel Lopez, told the Los Angeles Times that Archuleta "died in my arms" and was remembered as being full of life.

Community in Mourning and Ongoing Investigation

The shooting sent shockwaves through Stockton, a city of approximately 320,000 people located 80 miles east of San Francisco. A vigil was held on Sunday, where community members like Beatriz Vega, Ellein White, and Luz Guzman stood in prayer for the victims.

Police are actively searching for suspects and believe multiple shooters may have been involved in what they describe as a potentially targeted incident. Stockton's Mayor, Christina Fugazi, suggested the violence was gang-related, though investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive.

Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, urged the public to come forward with any information, "even rumours."

Among the injured was local anti-violence advocate Jasmine Dellafosse. The city's former mayor, Michael Tubbs, said she was in "deep mourning" after witnessing the horrific event.

The National Context of Gun Violence

This tragic event marks the United States' 17th mass killing in 2025, which represents the lowest annual figure since 2006, according to a database maintained by the Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University.

However, experts caution that this decline may simply indicate a return to previous average levels following significant spikes in mass killings in 2018 and 2019. The Stockton shooting underscores the persistent and complex challenge of gun violence facing communities across the nation.
