A Colombian national has been convicted of murdering two men whose bodies were discovered in suitcases near one of Bristol's most iconic landmarks.
Yostin Andres Mosquera, 34, was found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of murdering 62-year-old Albert Alfonso and 61-year-old Paul Long, both from the Bath area. The gruesome discovery was made by members of the public on July 11 near the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Chilling Discovery at Tourist Hotspot
The investigation began when police received reports of a man acting suspiciously with a suitcase near the famous bridge. Shortly after, two suitcases were discovered in the vicinity, each containing the body of a murder victim.
Detective Superintendent Gary Haskins described the case as "truly shocking," noting that the murders had taken place elsewhere before the bodies were transported to the bridge area.
Forensic Evidence Links Suspect to Crime
Mosquera's DNA was found on the suitcases and handles, providing crucial evidence linking him to the crime. CCTV footage also captured his movements around the time of the discovery.
Both victims were reportedly known to Mosquera, though police have not disclosed the specific motive behind the killings. The investigation revealed that Mosquera had travelled to Bristol specifically to dispose of the bodies.
International Dimension to Brutal Crime
The case has an international aspect, with Mosquera being a Colombian national residing in the UK. Authorities confirmed he will be sentenced on Friday, facing mandatory life imprisonment for the double murder.
Local residents and visitors to the area have expressed shock that such a violent crime occurred near the popular tourist destination, which typically sees thousands of visitors admiring the engineering marvel and scenic views.
