Serial domestic abuser Jason Mealey, 29, punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach after she returned home from a hospital visit. He then continued to harass her from his prison cell by sending letters under the names of fellow inmates, urging her to drop the case.
Attack after hospital visit
Liverpool Crown Court heard on Wednesday that Mealey, of Well Brow Road in Walton, had been in a relationship with the woman for about nine months during 2025. Issues began around two months in due to his drinking, consuming several cans of super strength cider daily. He also misused prescription medication and frequently initiated arguments over trivial matters that escalated into violent outbursts, damaging her property and punching walls. He threatened to have her shot if she called the police.
On December 3 last year, the victim attended hospital due to concerns about her pregnancy. Mealey left early due to his erratic behavior. She returned home around 2am to find him drunk on the sofa. He then hit her several times on the arms and wrists before punching her twice in the stomach. She was two months pregnant at the time.
Harassment from prison
After being charged and remanded, Mealey bombarded her with phone calls, texts, 19 letters, and two cards from prison, pressuring her to drop her support for the prosecution. The letters were written under the names of other prisoners and addressed using her middle name and mother's maiden name.
In a victim statement read to the court, she said: "I've lost trust in all men due to the defendant's actions. I just want to move on and never see or hear from the defendant again. This behaviour proves that the defendant doesn't care about what the judge says and will contact me or my family regardless of punishment."
Previous convictions
Mealey has five previous convictions for nine offences, including breaching a non-molestation order, criminal damage, and witness interference relating to a previous partner in 2022-2023. He was jailed for 46 weeks in 2024 for breaching another non-molestation order involving another ex-girlfriend.
Defending, Lahraib Iqbal said Mealey expressed genuine remorse and accepted his behavior was appalling. He is willing to engage with services and has gained employment as a wing cleaner in prison. His two youngest children are in foster care and due for adoption on July 15. Iqbal said: "His children are his biggest motivation for change."
Sentence
Mealey admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice on the day of trial. Appearing via video link from HMP Liverpool, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and given a five-year restraining order.
Sentencing, Recorder Richard Pratt KC said: "At the time, the victim had to attend hospital due to concerns around her pregnancy. When she returned home, you were intoxicated on the sofa. You set about attacking her... you forcibly punched her twice to the stomach. That was plainly a wicked thing to do, given her condition. Your antecedent history reveals you to have, on previous occasions, abused women and breached court orders. This is yet another example."
