A British national has been apprehended in Bali and is set to be deported back to the United Kingdom following his arrest over the weekend. The individual, a 45-year-old man identified by Indonesian authorities solely as 'SL' but named by British media outlets as Steven Lyons from Scotland, was taken into custody upon his arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport on the resort island.
Interpol Red Notice Triggers Arrest
Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya confirmed to reporters that the arrest was executed after the suspect was flagged as an 'Interpol red notice subject' during a routine system check conducted by immigration officials. Bugie Kurniawan, the head of immigration at the airport, elaborated that Lyons had arrived on a flight originating from Singapore when the alert was triggered, leading to his immediate detention.
Allegations of Transnational Criminal Activities
Adityajaya stated that the fugitive is wanted in Spain and is alleged to be the 'leader of a large-scale transnational criminal organisation engaged in drug trafficking and money laundering'. Untung Widyatmoko, secretary of Interpol's Indonesia bureau, provided further details, indicating that Lyons' criminal group has operated across multiple countries, including Spain, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.
The suspect is expected to be deported to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, according to Untung. This move underscores the international cooperation in tackling organised crime networks that span continents and involve sophisticated financial and narcotics operations.
Search for Associates Continues
In a related development, Indonesian police revealed that they are actively searching for two associates who travelled to Bali alongside Lyons but managed to evade detection upon arrival.
