Islamuddin Talash, a 43-year-old Afghan asylum seeker with a sexually transmitted infection, has been jailed for six years for raping a vulnerable man in Abbey Park, Leicester. The assault occurred on October 9, 2023, when the victim, a 20-year-old man who had run away from home, was approaching people in the park asking to buy a bicycle.
Details of the Assault
Talash, who was living in Westfield Road, Smethwick, at the time, invited the victim to his hotel, claiming he had a bike to offer. However, as they walked through the park, Talash led the man into bushes and raped him. The court heard that Talash ordered the victim to perform oral sex before the rape.
During the trial at Leicester Crown Court in June, Talash was found guilty of rape. He was sentenced on Wednesday, July 15, and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Recorder Sacha Ackland told Talash that once he completed his sentence, he would be subject to automatic deportation.
Role of Witnesses
Two teenage boys became suspicious of Talash's behavior and began filming him with their phones. When they approached the bushes, Talash fled. The teenagers found the victim and stayed with him, accompanying him to a police station to report the crime.
Detective Sergeant Sarah Jones from Leicestershire Police praised the teenagers' actions. "They did absolutely the right thing by acting on their suspicions. They, along with the victim, deserve enormous credit for giving an account in court that led to today's outcome," she said.
Victim's Vulnerability and Aggravating Factors
The court heard that it was the victim's first visit to Leicester, and he had conditions that reduced his ability to recognize danger and impaired his social skills. Prosecutor Paul Cavin KC noted that an aggravating factor was Talash's sexually transmitted infection, for which he was being treated at the time. The victim did not contract the infection but received treatment as a precaution.
Defense lawyer Tom Welshman said Talash recognized the seriousness of his offense and had come to the UK to escape "a hellish existence" under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, where some of his family had been killed.
Arrest and Aftermath
An officer walking through the park spotted a man matching the suspect's description from the witnesses' images. Talash was arrested immediately and charged within hours. Detective Sergeant Jones added: "The victim was vulnerable, and the defendant used this for his own sexual gratification. We hope that this case reassures the local community and helps the victim put the events of that afternoon behind him."
