Rohan Dennis pleads guilty to driving while disqualified

Former professional cyclist Rohan Dennis, 36, has pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday, following a breach of a good behaviour bond linked to the death of his Olympian wife, Melissa Hoskins. He now faces a potential jail sentence after a judge previously warned him he would be incarcerated if he drove while banned.

Background of the Case

In May 2025, Dennis was handed a suspended 17-month jail term and a five-year driving ban after pleading guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm in relation to Hoskins’ death. The 32-year-old Hoskins was struck by her husband’s vehicle near their Medindie home in Adelaide’s inner north on 30 December 2023. She suffered serious injuries and died at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Driving Incident and Court Appearance

On 11 June, Dennis was reported for driving while disqualified, and his car was impounded for 28 days after police allegedly observed him driving with two children as passengers. He pleaded guilty to the charge on Friday and will also appear in the District Court on 1 September for breaching the good behaviour bond. At his sentencing in May 2025, Dennis had agreed to a $100, two-year good behaviour bond, and his driver’s licence was suspended for five years. Judge Ian Press warned at the time that any violation of the driving suspension would result in jail.

Family and Public Reaction

After the May 2025 sentencing, Hoskins’ father, Peter Hoskins, stated that the family had not yet received an apology from Dennis, but expressed that a jail term was not something they were pursuing. In March, Dennis faced criticism for an Instagram post sharing a photo of a black Porsche with the caption “What an absolute weapon.” South Australia’s Victims Rights Commissioner, Sarah Quick, called the post “deeply offensive” and said it demonstrated “a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused” and “a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family.”

Career Highlights

Hoskins competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in the team pursuit and was part of the squad that won the 2015 world title. Dennis won two world titles in the road time trial, as well as a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
