Italian authorities have launched an investigation after four bodies were discovered floating in Venice's famous Grand Canal, sending shockwaves through the historic city.
The grim discovery was made near the Rialto Bridge, one of Venice's most recognisable landmarks, early on Tuesday morning. Local reports suggest the bodies were spotted by a passing water taxi driver who immediately alerted police.
Mystery Surrounds Victims
Details remain scarce as forensic teams work to identify the victims and determine the circumstances of their deaths. Preliminary reports indicate the deceased are three men and one woman, all believed to be middle-aged.
Venice police chief Marco Agostini told reporters: "This is a deeply disturbing incident that we're treating with the utmost seriousness. Our divers and forensic teams are conducting thorough searches of the area."
Tourist Hub Shocked
The Grand Canal, normally bustling with gondolas and water buses, was partially closed as authorities conducted their investigation. Tourists and locals alike expressed shock at the news.
"I came here for the beautiful architecture and history," said British visitor Sarah Jennings, 34. "To hear about bodies being found is just horrifying."
Possible Theories Emerge
While officials remain tight-lipped, local media has speculated about several possibilities:
- A tragic boating accident
- Possible link to organised crime
- Connection to Venice's underground drug scene
The Venice prosecutor's office has confirmed an autopsy will be performed on all four bodies in the coming days.
This incident comes just weeks after Venice implemented its controversial tourist tax in an effort to manage overtourism in the fragile lagoon city.
