A 50-year-old employee of the University of Aberdeen, Heather Herbert, has been arrested and charged in connection with a social media post about the death of former MP and Express columnist Ann Widdecombe. The post was shared online following the announcement of Ms Widdecombe's death on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Post Published Before Murder Probe
The post was reportedly published before Devon and Cornwall Police had launched a murder investigation into Ms Widdecombe's death. Police Scotland initially stated that no criminality had been established in relation to the post. However, following further assessment, the force confirmed on Thursday that a 50-year-old had been arrested and charged.
A Police Scotland statement read: "We received reports on Saturday 11 July 2026 relating to a post made online. Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
Death of Ann Widdecombe
Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP who later became a spokeswoman for Reform UK, was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday, July 9. She was 78. The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but a murder investigation was launched by Devon and Cornwall Police.
A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, July 11. On Monday, July 13, he was re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Legal Proceedings
The case has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the online post and the subsequent murder probe. Heather Herbert is expected to appear in court at a later date. The procurator fiscal will review the case and determine further legal steps.
