Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Nevada Prison Authorities

The family of a Las Vegas man has initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against the Nevada Department of Corrections, following his tragic death just days before he was scheduled to be released from custody.

Allegations of Negligence and Failed Protection

Filed on Friday, 7th November 2025, in the Clark County District Court, the legal action contends that the department blatantly disregarded protective custody protocols. The lawsuit states that Jacob Herman, 35, was housed with another inmate who had repeatedly threatened his life.

According to the complaint, corrections officers were aware of the threats but failed to take action to safeguard Herman. The other prisoner had allegedly explicitly threatened to kill Herman if they were ever placed together in the same cell.

A Fatal Outcome and Demand for Justice

The legal documents confirm that Jacob Herman was killed on July 16 inside the High Desert State Prison. The incident occurred shockingly close to his anticipated release date, turning what should have been a celebration into a tragedy.

Seeking accountability and compensation for their profound loss, Herman's family is asking for at least $15,000 in damages. At the time of the lawsuit's filing, the Nevada Department of Corrections had not provided an immediate response to requests for comment on the allegations.
