Essex Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a convicted criminal managed to escape from a Category B prison in Chelmsford. Hadush Kebatu, who was serving time for serious offences, vanished from HMP Chelmsford on Tuesday afternoon.
The escape has triggered a major police operation across Essex and neighbouring counties, with authorities warning the public not to approach the fugitive if spotted.
Dangerous Fugitive on the Run
Kebatu, described as approximately 5ft 9ins tall with short black hair, was last seen wearing a grey tracksuit. Police have emphasised that he represents a potential danger to the public and should not be approached under any circumstances.
An Essex Police spokesperson stated: "We are urgently seeking the public's help in locating Hadush Kebatu. If you see him, do not approach but instead call 999 immediately, quoting reference 842 of 25 June."
Security Breach at Category B Facility
The escape from HMP Chelmsford raises serious questions about security at the Category B prison, which houses offenders considered potentially dangerous to the public. Prison authorities are conducting an internal investigation to determine how Kebatu managed to breach security protocols.
Local residents have expressed concern about the security lapse, particularly given the prison's location in a residential area of the Essex county town.
Nationwide Alert Issued
Police forces across the UK have been alerted to watch for the escaped inmate. The National Crime Agency and other law enforcement bodies have been notified as part of the coordinated search effort.
Investigators are following multiple lines of enquiry and are appealing for anyone with information, including potential sightings or knowledge of Kebatu's whereabouts, to come forward immediately.
