Tragic Accident Claims Life of Bristol Decorator After Flag-Erecting Fall
A painter and decorator from Bristol has died from catastrophic head injuries sustained in a fall from a ladder while erecting a Union flag on a lamppost, an inquest has concluded.
Fatal Incident Following Football Match
Paul John Lumber, a 61-year-old married man from Duckmoor Road in Bristol, had attended a Bristol City FC football match on the evening of 22 November last year. After returning home around 7.30pm, he retrieved the key to his work van to access his ladder and left his residence.
The court heard that Mr Lumber had consumed several alcoholic drinks during the day. His intention, according to paramedic notes read during the hearing, was "to put up flags around the neighbourhood."
Neighbours' Discovery and Emergency Response
Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang before discovering Mr Lumber on the ground with his ladder nearby. They immediately dialled 999 for emergency assistance.
His wife, Michelle Lumber, became aware of sirens across the road and went outside to find her husband being treated by paramedics. A Union flag was already attached to the lamppost at the scene.
Medical Treatment and Deterioration
Mr Lumber was rushed to Southmead Hospital where CT scans revealed extensive head injuries including a skull fracture. He underwent two surgical operations in the neurosurgery department under the care of Dr Richard Moon.
Despite medical intervention, his condition deteriorated over the following two weeks, and he died on 6 December. The cause of death was recorded as traumatic brain injury resulting from a fall.
Inquest Findings and Family Statement
Dr Simon Fox KC, assistant coroner for Avon, reached a conclusion of accidental death following a short hearing at Avon Coroner's Court. The coroner stated: "Mr Lumber fell from a ladder while tying a Union Jack flag to a lamppost at night after consuming alcohol."
Coroner's officer Andrew Eastwood read a statement confirming Mr Lumber's details and noted that the family had no concerns regarding the care or treatment provided to him.
Remembering a Devoted Football Fan
Mr Lumber was a well-known supporter of Bristol City FC and had authored two books about his experiences titled It All Kicked Off In Bristol, which explored football hooliganism.
Following his death, a close friend paid tribute to him as a Bristol City and England supporter who "followed both club and country with unwavering devotion." Friends described him as a man whose world revolved around those he loved.
The inquest heard statements from multiple witnesses and medical professionals, painting a comprehensive picture of the tragic sequence of events that led to the decorator's untimely death.
