Woman Sentenced to 13 Years for Modern Slavery and Abuse of Teenage Girl
Amanda Wixon, aged 56, has been jailed for 13 years after being convicted of false imprisonment, forced labour, and assault against a teenage girl. The victim was held captive for an astonishing 25 years, from 1995 to 2021, in Wixon's overcrowded and squalid home, where she was treated as a house slave and subjected to severe and prolonged abuse.
Details of the Abuse and Imprisonment
The abuse inflicted on the victim included regular beatings, having her teeth knocked out, bleach splashed on her face, her head repeatedly shaved, and being denied basic necessities such as food and the ability to wash. Wixon also used a broom handle to assault the girl, adding to the physical torment. In addition to the physical violence, Wixon stole the victim's benefits, receiving over £33,000 between 2016 and 2021, with a significant sum believed to have been taken in previous years, exploiting the victim's vulnerabilities for financial gain.
Victim's Recovery and Current Situation
Despite the enduring trauma from decades of captivity, the victim, who has learning difficulties, is now showing remarkable resilience. She is living with a foster family, attending college to build a new life, and has even been on holidays abroad since her rescue in 2021. This positive development highlights her strength and the support systems now in place to aid her recovery.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Wixon was convicted after a trial and arrived at court for sentencing, where the judge emphasized the severity of the crimes. The 13-year prison term reflects the gravity of the false imprisonment, forced labour, and assault charges, serving as a stark reminder of the legal consequences for such heinous acts of modern slavery.
