Two men have been formally charged with espionage activities linked to Iran, following allegations of surveillance targeting the Jewish community in London. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, a dual Iranian and British national, and Alireza Farasati, 22, an Iranian national, face serious charges under the National Security Act.
Details of the Charges and Investigation
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has stated that the charges relate specifically to Iran, with the men accused of engaging in contact likely to assist a foreign intelligence service between 9 July and 15 August last year. According to police reports, the alleged activities included gathering information and conducting reconnaissance on locations and individuals associated with the Jewish community in the London area.
Both defendants were arrested and detained on Friday, 6 March, as part of a broader investigation into potential threats. Shahsavani, residing in North Finchley, north London, and Farasati, from Edgware, north-west London, are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday to face these charges.
