Earlier in the week, on Tuesday evening, a 25-year-old man died while in police custody in Darwin's northern suburbs. Police had arrested him following reports of an assault at a retirement village in Casuarina. He was detained in the rear cage of a police vehicle, where he later exhibited laboured breathing. Officers contacted St John Ambulance and initiated CPR, but the man was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital and declared deceased at 10:10 pm.
