Teenage Homicides Plummet by Nearly Half to Lowest Level Since 2013
Teen Homicides Halve to Lowest Level Since 2013

Official statistics have revealed a significant and encouraging decline in teenage homicides across England and Wales, with the annual figure falling by nearly half to reach its lowest point in more than a decade.

A Dramatic Decline in Youth Violence

According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were 34 homicide victims aged between 13 and 19 in the year ending March 2025. This represents a substantial 48% decrease from the 66 teenage homicides recorded in the previous twelve-month period.

Knife Crime Reduction as Key Driver

The ONS analysis suggests this positive trend is likely being driven by a steep and specific reduction in homicides involving knives or other sharp instruments. Offences in this category fell by a remarkable 59% year-on-year, dropping from 54 incidents in 2023/24 to just 22 in 2024/25.

This brings the total number of teenage homicide victims to its lowest level since the 2012/13 period, when 31 such tragic incidents were officially recorded. The figures form part of the ONS's comprehensive annual review of homicide trends within the two nations.

Broader Context of Overall Homicide Rates

The broader picture for homicides of all ages also shows improvement. A total of 522 homicide victims were recorded in the year to March 2025, marking an 8% decline from the 566 recorded the previous year. This is the lowest annual total since 2014/15, when the figure was 504.

The statistical body emphasised that the rate of homicides "remains very low" when compared with most other categories of crime. The data shows there were 8.6 homicides per million people in 2024/25, which is the lowest rate recorded since 1977, when it stood at 8.5 per million.

Understanding the Homicide Category

It is important to note that the ONS homicide figures encompass all offences legally classified as murder and manslaughter. This includes the specific category of corporate manslaughter, providing a complete overview of unlawful killings.

While the reasons behind the significant drop in teenage homicides, particularly those involving knives, will require further analysis, the latest statistics offer a cautiously optimistic snapshot regarding youth violence trends in England and Wales.
