Jonty Bravery, the man serving a life sentence for throwing a six-year-old boy from the tenth-floor balcony of the Tate Modern in 2019, has been convicted of violently assaulting two nurses at the high-security Broadmoor Hospital.
A Violent Outburst in a Secure Setting
Bravery, 24, was found guilty in his absence at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 27 November 2025, for the September 2024 attacks on nurses Linda McKinlay and Kate Mastalerz. The court heard that the incident began when Bravery, who requires constant monitoring by three staff members, asked to use the toilet at around 9:30 PM.
Following this, he attempted to harm himself, prompting the nurses to intervene. As they tried to restrain him on his mattress, Bravery became aggressive. Prosecutor Tom Heslop detailed how Bravery kicked Nurse Mastalerz in the thigh and clawed at Nurse McKinlay's face, leaving a wound that caused blood to drip down her cheek.
The Aftermath and Staff Testimony
Body-worn footage shown in court captured the struggle, with a panicked staff member heard shouting, "Jesus Christ do something" as others rushed to help. For Ms McKinlay, a grandmother with a long career at Broadmoor, this was her first-ever physical attack at the facility.
She told the court she acted to prevent Bravery from hurting himself. "He was screaming and shouting and kicking. We shouted for assistance," she testified. Describing her injuries, she said, "He attacked my face, he was clawing at my face... In the aftermath I was very shaken." She required hospital treatment for her wounds.
Nurse Mastalerz reported being left with a bruised thigh from the kick and described the event as a "very stressful situation."
History of Violence and Sentencing Adjourned
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring found Bravery guilty of both assaults, stating the defendant had "went too far." Sentencing has been adjourned until 8 January, with the court requesting an update on Bravery's current mental health condition.
This is not Bravery's first conviction for assaulting staff at Broadmoor. In 2020, he received an additional 14-week jail term after admitting to punching one nursing assistant and biting another.
Bravery is currently being held at Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, after receiving a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years for the Tate Modern attack. The young victim survived the 2019 fall but suffered life-changing injuries including a brain bleed and multiple broken bones. His family revealed in October that he had only recently regained the ability to run, jump, and swim.
