Stalker's Reign of Terror Ended by Heroic Police Officers Using Anti-Stalking Law
Stalker's reign of terror stopped by police using new laws

A persistent stalker who subjected multiple victims to a terrifying campaign of harassment has been removed from the streets thanks to the determined work of police officers using groundbreaking anti-stalking legislation.

The Campaign of Terror

Michael McInally, 37, waged a systematic campaign of fear against his victims, leaving them terrified to leave their homes. His behaviour escalated from unwanted messages to threatening behaviour that made his targets fear for their safety.

One victim described how McInally's actions left her feeling like a prisoner in her own home, constantly looking over her shoulder and afraid to answer her phone. The psychological impact of his relentless attention created lasting trauma that continues to affect his victims today.

Police Intervention Breaks the Cycle

Dedicated officers from Police Scotland identified the pattern of behaviour and successfully applied for a Stalking Protection Order – one of the first uses of this powerful new legislation in their area. This crucial intervention provided immediate protection for the victims while building the case against McInally.

Detective Constable Ross MacDonald, who led the investigation, stated: "This was a particularly nasty case where the victims were subjected to significant psychological harm. Using the Stalking Protection Order allowed us to intervene quickly and prevent further harm while we built our case."

Landmark Sentence Sends Strong Message

At Airdrie Sheriff Court, McInally was sentenced to four years and ten months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple stalking charges. The significant sentence reflects the serious nature of his crimes and the impact on his victims.

The case demonstrates how new legislation is empowering police to take decisive action against stalkers before their behaviour escalates to physical violence. Stalking Protection Orders provide a vital tool for officers to intervene early and protect potential victims.

A Warning to Potential Stalkers

This case sends a clear message that stalking will not be tolerated in our communities. Police now have enhanced powers to identify, monitor and prosecute stalkers, ensuring victims receive the protection they need.

If you or someone you know is experiencing stalking behaviour, police encourage reporting it immediately. Early intervention can prevent escalation and provide crucial protection through tools like Stalking Protection Orders.
