Sky News Pauses After Ann Widdecombe Death Sparks Fears

Sky News paused its live coverage on Friday to discuss the latest developments following the murder of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday. The 78-year-old, who later became a Reform UK spokeswoman, was killed in what police described as a "targeted attack."

Green Party Leader Shares Safety Concerns

During the paused segment, host Kamali Melbourne interviewed Green Party leader Zack Polanski, asking whether he was concerned about his own safety after Widdecombe's death and the broader threats to politicians. Polanski acknowledged his unease, stating, "I am concerned about my personal safety. There have been several instances in the past few months and arrests in relation to threats towards me."

Polanski highlighted disparities in security provisions, noting that Reform UK had been offered full state security but declined, while he as a party leader received no such support. He called for a non-partisan approach to security for all party leaders, regardless of government or opposition status.

Police Investigation Update

Five days after Widdecombe's body was discovered, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), which has taken over the investigation, provided an update. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, speaking outside New Scotland Yard, confirmed the attack was "targeted" and "brutal." However, he declined to speculate on a motive, stating, "I don't want to rule out anything out." Taylor also confirmed that, at this stage, the murder has not been declared a terrorist incident.

Widdecombe's Final Interview

Footage emerged showing Widdecombe giving an interview less than half an hour before police believe she was attacked. The former Conservative MP had a long career in politics, serving as a minister under John Major and later becoming a prominent figure in the Brexit campaign and Reform UK.
