Iconic Hollywood director Rob Reiner shared a devastating personal fear with friends mere hours before he and his wife were found brutally murdered at their Los Angeles home. The couple's son has since been arrested on suspicion of their killings.
A Harrowing Discovery in Brentwood
The bodies of filmmaking legend Rob Reiner, 78, and his photographer wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were discovered at their Brentwood mansion on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The grim find was made by their daughter, Romy. Police confirmed both victims had suffered multiple knife wounds.
The following day, authorities announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old middle son, Nick, on suspicion of the double murder. The Los Angeles Police Department stated investigators had determined the deaths were a homicide and that Nick was responsible.
The suspect, who has a long-documented history of drug addiction and mental health struggles, was expected to appear in court at 8.30am local time in LA.
Final Hours: A Star-Studded Party and Loud Argument
Insight into the family's final hours has emerged from a Christmas party hosted by Conan O'Brien on the Saturday night before the murders. The Reiners attended the festive event with their son Nick, where his behaviour reportedly caused alarm among guests.
A source told People magazine that "Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous." The evening culminated in a "very loud argument" between the parents and their son, allegedly centred on Nick's drug use and his refusal to enter a treatment facility.
A longtime family friend living near the Reiners' home revealed to The New York Post the depth of the couple's concern. "Rob had been telling people that they're scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating," the friend shared.
A History of Struggle and Violence
Nick Reiner's struggles are not new. He first entered rehab at age 15 and would go through a total of 17 stints. Family friends disclosed that while Nick claimed to have kicked his habit, he was "not so much off them," and the ongoing battle over treatment had been a source of argument for years.
