Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley is set to front a new feature-length documentary for Channel 5, titled 'Richard Madeley On Murder Row'. The programme, produced by ITN Productions, offers rare access inside one of the most controversial prisons in the world: Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) in El Salvador.
Inside the Mega-Prison
The 69-year-old broadcaster enters the vast maximum security facility, which has become the cornerstone of President Nayib Bukele's war on gangs. With exceptional access to the entire site—which show bosses say took months to negotiate—Madeley confronts the realities of life inside this extraordinary facility. He speaks with inmates living under one of the strictest prison regimes globally and interviews the guards responsible for running the prison around the clock.
Conditions Inside CECOT
Conditions inside the prison are stark and unlike anything in the UK system. More than 80 inmates sleep in metal bunks stacked four beds high inside vast concrete cells. Prisoners are stripped to boxer shorts with their heads shaved, lights remain on 24 hours a day, and there are no family visits, recreational spaces, or rehabilitation programmes.
In addition to his time inside the jail, Madeley visits the tough urban areas where gangs still operate to assess the impact of CECOT on the wider community.
Madeley's Reflections
Richard said: 'I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film for Channel 5. It's not every day you're given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT. What struck me straight away was the sheer scale of it, and the stories behind it. In meeting the people who run the prison and those living inside it, what unfolds is a fascinating and often surprising look at justice, security, and the human realities behind the headlines. It's been a remarkable experience.'
Production Insights
Guy Davies, Consultant Editor for Commissioning at Channel 5, added: 'This access to CECOT was a tantalising prospect. Richard is, at heart, a first-class popular journalist and we were thrilled to get the chance for him to serve some time there. I think viewers will be very surprised by the results.'
Andy Dunn, Senior Executive Producer at ITN Productions, said: 'Gaining access to CECOT, the most secretive and notorious prison in the world, took months of negotiation. It was really important for Richard to experience the extreme conditions there first hand, and he takes us on a compelling and unique journey as he considers the effectiveness and ethics of such a harsh regime.'
Madeley's Career
With a career spanning over four decades, Richard Madeley has been a fixture on ITV's This Morning and Good Morning Britain. He and his wife Judy Finnigan hosted This Morning for 13 years, from the show's launch in October 1988 until July 2001. While best known as a daytime television presenter, he has fronted several documentaries and factual programmes, including 'Eye of the Storm' and 'Madeley Meets the Squatters'. His last major TV appearance was on 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!' in 2021.
