Racist Axe Attacker Receives Four-Year Prison Sentence for Edinburgh Station Assault

Brian Patterson, a 22-year-old man from Brechin, Scotland, has been jailed for four years after carrying out a vicious and racially motivated axe attack on a complete stranger at Edinburgh Waverley train station. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Patterson's actions were described as "vile and premeditated" by detectives investigating the case.

Shocking CCTV Footage Captures Terrifying Incident

Disturbing CCTV footage captured the moment Patterson launched his unprovoked assault just before midnight on September 5 last year. The video shows Patterson exiting a train and following his victim and a friend after spotting them on a bridge within the busy station. As the pair stepped onto an escalator, Patterson charged toward them from behind before swinging an axe and striking the man on the side of the head.

The court heard that Patterson had been racially abusing the victim and making inappropriate sexual comments toward the victim's friend prior to the attack. Patterson, who reeked of alcohol according to court testimony, grew increasingly aggressive and began threatening the victim, who attempted to leave the situation by getting on the escalator.

Weapon Concealed in Clothing Before Brutal Strike

Patterson continued his threats before pulling an axe from within his clothes and striking the victim. The victim initially didn't realize he had been hit with an axe, suffering only a bump to the head and cuts along his neck. He watched as Patterson ran away while tucking something into his waistband.

Police launched an immediate investigation and traced Patterson less than a month later. While in custody and under caution, Patterson asked arresting officers if the man he had "supposedly" attacked was alright, revealing what detectives described as his self-centered attitude toward the violent incident.

Detective Condemns "Brazen and Horrific" Actions

Detective Constable Donna Davanna of British Transport Police expressed relief at the sentencing, stating: "I'm extremely pleased to see Patterson jailed for his vile and premeditated attack. Patterson's brazen and horrific actions could have resulted in a man losing his life, and it is thanks only to luck that the consequences of the attack were not more severe."

She added: "When under caution and asking about the state of his victim, it quickly became clear that he really only cared about himself and showed utter indignation. I hope that regardless of how crass and heartless Patterson has shown to be, this can bring the victim some comfort and closure."

The detective emphasized that British Transport Police take every report of violence on the railway network extremely seriously and will not tolerate offences such as those carried out by Patterson.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing Details

Patterson pled guilty last month to racially aggravated assault and causing danger to life at the same Edinburgh High Court where he received his four-year sentence. The court heard detailed accounts of how the attack unfolded and the racial motivation behind Patterson's actions.

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences for violent, racially motivated crimes committed on public transport networks. Authorities continue to emphasize their zero-tolerance approach to such offences, particularly those involving weapons and premeditated violence against innocent members of the public.
