A Royal Mail postman has been left with serious injuries, including broken ribs and a punctured lung, after a terrifying incident in which he was run over by his own delivery van.
A Frightening Accident on a Huddersfield Hill
The shocking event took place in the Crosland Moor area of Huddersfield on Monday, December 29. The postman, a man in his 50s well-known on his round, was carrying out his usual duties when his Royal Mail van began to roll down a hill by itself. In the chaos, the vehicle struck him, causing severe injuries.
He was rushed to hospital following what the local community has described as a "frightening accident". His injuries are confirmed to be multiple fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and various cuts and bruises. Medical professionals expect his recovery to be long and painful.
Community Spirit and Quick-Thinking Heroes
In the midst of the accident, the actions of three members of the public helped prevent a potentially worse outcome. They put themselves in danger to halt the runaway postal van from rolling further. Notably, the driver of a Ford Ka managed to stop the vehicle, an act hailed as heroic by witnesses and the community.
In response to the incident, the Crosland Moor Community Group has launched a fundraising campaign to support the injured postman. They have set up a JustGiving page with an initial goal of raising £1,000 to help with financial pressures during his extended recovery.
The organiser stated the community was "shaken" by the event, describing the postman as far more than just a delivery worker. "He's a familiar face, a friendly smile, and someone who shows up in all weathers to keep our community connected. Now it's our turn to show up for him," the appeal reads.
Messages of Support and Ongoing Investigation
The fundraiser has already begun receiving donations and heartfelt messages. One donor called him a "true gentleman and excellent postie," while another praised the "hero" who helped stop the van. As of the latest update, £245 has been raised from 16 supporters.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash between the Royal Mail van and the Ford Ka on Blackmoorfoot Road. The community's focus, however, remains firmly on supporting one of their own through a difficult time.
