Leicester Police Condemn Online Rumours After Fatal Stabbing Near University
Leicester Police have issued a strong statement condemning the spread of online misinformation following a fatal stabbing incident near De Montfort University. The force has urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue into the tragic event that resulted in the death of a man in his 20s.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
Officers were called to the scene shortly after 5pm on Tuesday, responding to reports of a man who had collapsed on a street in central Leicester. The location was near the university campus, specifically at the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane, across from The Bowling Green pub. The victim, a man in his 20s, was swiftly transported to Leicester Royal Infirmary but succumbed to his stab wounds a short time later.
An 18-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remains in police custody. Initial enquiries suggest that the victim was involved in an altercation with another man in the street prior to the stabbing. The other individual left the scene before police arrived, prompting a thorough investigation to piece together the exact sequence of events.
Police Response and Public Appeal
In a statement shared on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Leicester Police addressed the circulating rumours head-on. "Speculation is unhelpful, but we can confirm that this was not a mass stabbing. Further details will be published shortly on our website and social media channels," the force stated. Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Lorna Granville emphasised the importance of accurate information and community cooperation.
Detective Inspector Granville provided an update on the investigation: "We are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area and speaking to potential witnesses to assist with our inquiry. We know that many people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived, and we extend our gratitude to them. If you were one of these individuals and have not yet spoken to police, please make contact with us."
Witness Accounts and Community Impact
A De Montfort University student, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted witnessing the aftermath of the attack. The student, who was returning home from a field trip, described seeing a person on the pavement receiving medical attention, including CPR. "I just saw a person on the floor and getting CPR. I was going back home then I just saw the police around and saw the person on the floor. He was an old man, I think. I didn't really look much because I'm really kind of sensitive," the student said.
The incident has caused significant disruption in the city, with several roads closed as part of the police operation. Authorities are working to minimise this impact and have announced that local officers will conduct reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days. Detective Inspector Granville added: "The incident happened at 5pm, so we know the area was busy with motorists. If you saw anything or captured footage on a dashcam as you drove past, we would like to hear from you."
Anyone with information is encouraged to call 101 and quote incident number 495 of February 3 to assist the ongoing investigation.
