Police Fatally Shoot Woman After Knife Attack on Child at Walmart
Omaha police officers fatally shot a woman on Tuesday after she allegedly slashed a young boy with a knife during an attempted kidnapping outside a local Walmart, according to authorities. The incident, which began inside the store, escalated quickly, leading to a deadly confrontation.
Details of the Violent Incident
Deputy Chief Scott Gray stated that the suspect approached a woman and a 2- or 3-year-old boy inside the Walmart, brandishing a large knife and "took possession of the child, essentially kidnapping the child." The suspect then ordered the woman to walk ahead of a shopping cart while holding the child at knifepoint. They exited the store and moved down a driveway, where the two women engaged in a verbal altercation for several minutes before police arrived.
After responding to a 911 call, officers confronted the suspect outside the store and issued commands. Gray reported that she then began "swiping the knife at the child, cutting him across the face." At least one officer opened fire, resulting in the woman's death at the scene.
Child's Condition and Investigation
The child was transported to a hospital for treatment of a large laceration across the left side of his face and to a hand. Authorities confirmed that he is expected to survive his injuries. The relationship between the boy and his caretaker remains unclear, and it is unknown what provoked the suspect. Gray emphasized that the two women did not know each other.
Body-worn camera images released by police show the woman raising a knife over the young boy, who was sitting in a shopping cart, as an officer aims a gun at her. Investigators are reviewing video footage from the store to gather more evidence.
Context and Aftermath
Gray described the event as an isolated incident, noting that the Walmart was largely empty as police continued their investigation. He explained that the actions inside the store would not necessarily have drawn attention from other shoppers, as the suspect and the woman walked out purposefully but casually. "I don't think anybody was actually looking at them as being a suspect of anything," Gray added.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the full sequence of events and determine the motive behind this shocking attack.
