Plymouth Marina Drowning Ruled as Murder Case Proceeds
The tragic death of a 24-year-old Plymouth man, whose body was discovered in a local marina, has been officially confirmed as drowning, as legal proceedings commence against a teenager charged with murder.
Discovery and Investigation
Drew Perham, a resident of Plymouth, was reported missing after a night out in the city. He was last seen leaving The Depo, a local establishment, prompting concern among friends and family. Devon and Cornwall Police launched a search operation, which culminated in the heartbreaking discovery of Perham's body in the water at Millbay Marina on Sunday, January 25.
At a brief inquest hearing, Devon coroner Deborah Archer stated the medical cause of death as immersion in water, resulting in drowning. This finding has set the stage for a major criminal investigation, with detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team taking charge of the case.
Arrests and Charges
Following the investigation, Layton Randle, aged 19 and from Oakfield Terrace Road in Plymouth, has been formally charged with murder. In addition, two other 19-year-old men, one from Plymouth and one from Exmouth, were arrested on suspicion of murder. Both have since been released on bail, pending further inquiries by the authorities.
Randle made his initial appearance at Plymouth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, January 28, where a significant public gathering formed outside the building. During the hearing, he spoke only to confirm his name and address, with no pleas entered at this stage. He was remanded into custody and subsequently appeared at Plymouth Crown Court on Thursday, January 29, where he was again remanded.
Legal Proceedings and Social Media Warning
The case is set to continue, with Randle scheduled to appear at Plymouth Crown Court on March 6 for a pre-trial preparation hearing, where a plea may be entered. During the recent court session, Judge Robert Linford issued a stern warning regarding social media speculation about the case.
He cautioned: "People need to resist the temptation to comment on social media on this case as it may prejudice a fair trial." This statement underscores the sensitivity of the ongoing legal process and the importance of maintaining judicial integrity.
Community Response and Tributes
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has expressed profound grief. Floral tributes have been laid in memory of Drew Perham at King Point Marina in Millbay, Plymouth, reflecting the impact of his loss on loved ones and locals. The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting concerns over safety and justice in the area.
As the investigation progresses, authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward, while the legal system moves forward with the charges against Randle. The outcome of the upcoming hearings will be closely watched by both the community and legal observers.
