A man in his thirties has died after being struck by a marked police vehicle in a tragic incident in central London during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Emergency Response Ends in Tragedy
The collision occurred on Borough High Street in Southwark, close to the popular Borough Market area, at approximately 00:34am on Wednesday, 7 January. The Metropolitan Police officers driving the car were responding to an emergency 999 call at the time.
Officers immediately provided emergency first aid to the pedestrian before paramedics from the London Ambulance Service arrived at the scene. Despite the rapid medical response, the man was pronounced dead at the location.
Major Emergency Service Deployment
The London Ambulance Service dispatched significant resources to the incident. A spokesperson confirmed they sent an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a paramedic in a fast response car, and an incident response officer. A trauma team from London's Air Ambulance also attended by car.
The first paramedic arrived on the scene in under four minutes, highlighting the speed of the emergency response. Specialist officers have informed the man's next-of-kin and are providing them with support.
Independent Investigation Launched
In line with standard procedure following a serious incident involving police, the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards was notified. Furthermore, the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), has begun an independent investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
A large police presence remained in the area following the incident, with cordons causing disruption to local traffic. The Metropolitan Police stated that officers will continue to support the IOPC with its enquiries.
